The Department of Speech-Language Pathology offers two competitive one-year post-graduate Clinical Fellowships. The positions run from July to June each year. The application process typically begins in February.
Acute Care Clinical Fellowship
The acute care clinical fellowship position offers a comprehensive training experience, primarily serving inpatients at Nebraska Medicine. within multiple intensive care units, progressive care units and specialty floors such as neuroscience, solid organ transplant, heart and vascular, and the Werner Cancer Hospital.
Experience across modalities is provided including evaluation and treatment of dysphagia, aphasia, motor speech disorders, cognitive-communication deficits, voice disorders/tracheostomy, and augmentative and alternative communication. The fellow will:
- Manage an inpatient caseload, including clinical bedside dysphagia evaluations and Modified Barium Swallow studies
- Function as part of the Speech-Language Pathology team
- Attend scholarly events, such as Speech-Language Pathology department journal club and TheraChat, a monthly discussion about clinical topics pertinent to medical Speech Pathologists and multi-disciplinary professionals
- Participate in and present in-services to other health care providers
- Collaborate with members of the health care team including physicians, nurses, PT and OT, and respiratory therapy among others

Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disorders (LEND) Clinical Fellowship
The LEND clinical fellowship is offered in collaboration with the MMI LEND program and offers a multi-faceted training experience serving children with intellectual and developmental disorders in an outpatient setting. The position focus is on evaluation and treatment of individuals with autism spectrum disorder through collaboration with the integrated Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (iCASD). Augmentative and alternative communication evaluation and treatment is also a focus of this experience.
Experience across modalities is provided including evaluation and treatment of speech and language disorders, autism spectrum disorder, and augmentative and alternative communication. The fellow will:
- Manage an outpatient caseload
- Function as part of the Speech-Language Pathology team
- LEND opportunities include completing interdisciplinary observations, attending seminars, participating in a service-learning project and completing a research project with supervision
- Attend scholarly events, such as Speech-Language Pathology department journal club and TheraChat, a monthly discussion about clinical topics pertinent to medical Speech Pathologists and multi-disciplinary professionals
- Participate in and present in-services to other health care providers
- Collaborate with members of the health care team including families, behavior analysts, psychologist, PT and OT
