Transformative Speech-Language Therapy Assessment and Treatment

The Munroe-Meyer Institute's Department of Speech-Language Pathology provides adult and pediatric speech therapy services for clients in outpatient facilities, multidisciplinary clinics and inpatient at Nebraska Medicine.

Family-centered services include speech-language therapy assessment and treatment for clients of all ages with disorders affecting:

  • Cognition (cognitive communication).
  • Speech and language.
  • Swallowing.
  • Voice.

Program Focus

Our speech-language pathology team believes that
  • Everyone should be able to communicate independently.
  • Team collaboration between families, community partners and health professionals is key.
  • Family/child preferences and values, along with best practice evidence, guides effective treatment choices.

Areas of Specialty

Explore the assessments and therapies offered by our team that are based on common speech and language disorders.

Cognitive-Communication Disorders

Any aspect of communication that is affected by disruption of thinking.

Swallowing Disorders (Dysphagia)

Difficulty moving food from the mouth to the stomach.

Speech-Language Disorders

Trouble producing sounds correctly, blending sounds to form words, understanding spoken or written information or thoughts; difficulty sharing ideas verbally, in writing or with gestures.

Voice Disorders

Affects vocal quality, pitch, volume and breath; can occur along with disease, neurological conditions or as the result of how a person uses their voice resulting in ineffective communication.

Clinics and Services

We deliver expert patient- and family-centered care to children and adults at MMI and Nebraska Medicine, in integrated care and multidisciplinary clinics collaborating with other specialists and across Nebraska in RiteCare Clinics.

Department Mission

The mission of MMI’s Department of Speech-Language Pathology is to provide exceptional, family-centered services for the evaluation and treatment of speech, language, voice, cognitive and swallowing disorders of patients of all ages. Additionally, faculty and staff develop the next generation of highly skilled practitioners and establish a meaningful research foundation that leads trends in clinical practice.
