Training in Recreational Therapy
The Recreational Therapy (RT) Department at MMI has full-time staff members nationally credentialed in therapeutic recreation as Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRS) by the National Council on Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC). The department also has specialists certified in adapted aquatics by the Aquatic Therapy Rehabilitation Institute (ATRI) and as horticultural therapists by the American Horticultural Therapy Association (AHTA). In addition, the department also has certified special education and adapted physical education specialists.
The department provides pre-service practicum opportunities for a wide-ranging variety of human services fields including:
- nursing, occupational and physical therapy majors;
- special education;
- psychology;
- physical education;
- exercise science;
- therapeutic recreation majors; and
- art, music and dance therapy majors.
More than thirty local and national colleges and universities have sent students to develop in-depth experience with our participants who have developmental and intellectual disabilities.
The department also provides internship training for both undergraduate and graduate students interested in pursuing the CTRS national credential according to the NCTRC curriculum guidelines. This capstone experience training does require a training contract between the academic home institution and the Munroe-Meyer Institute. Details of this contract can be obtained by contacting the RT director. The training contract must be in place prior to student placement.
