Occupational Therapy

We help individuals across the lifespan achieve meaningful participation at home, work, school and in the community.

The Munroe-Meyer Institute's Department of Occupational Therapy provides adult and pediatric occupational therapy services for clients of all ages. Using evidence based practices, our professionals assess skills and deliver services for clients in multidisciplinary clinics, outpatient facilities, Neonatal Care Units, and the Madonna and Omaha Public Schools systems.

Family Centered Care

Occupational therapists help individuals with developmental and physical disabilities, as well as sensorimotor challenges to successfully participate in everyday activities and tasks, including:

Typical Reasons for Occupational Therapy

  • Assistance to increase independence in self help skills, fine motor skills or sensory motor abilities.

  • Difficulty with physical, cognitive or sensory areas that interfere in living life to the fullest.

  • Developmental delays and/or perceptual challenges that interfere with an individual's participation in daily living activities at home, school or in the community.

Our occupational therapy professionals help empower individuals across the lifespan to recognize and develop appropriate sensorimotor responses and/or skills to achieve meaningful participation in daily living activities.

Outpatient or Short-term Therapy Opportunities

Occupational therapists provide therapy services for adult and pediatric patients through outpatient care or center-based clinics. Both self-care and motor concerns can be addressed in outpatient or short-term, intensive programs.

  • Adult services focus on occupational therapy skills needed to successfully transition to independent living.
  • Aquatic occupational therapy can promote strength, endurance and motor function.
  • Equipment and orthotic evaluations can help with the selection and use of equipment aiming to enhance their ability to engage in everyday activities.
  • Functional driving assessment and treatment can increase independence in community mobility.
  • Functional vision and Cortical Visual Impairment Assessments can offer information about how individuals use their vision in everyday activities.
  • Motor evaluations at Nebraska Medicine and Methodist Women’s Hospital NICUs to assess patients' fine motor and gross motor skills, limitations and to establish therapy needs.
  • Pelvic floor occupational therapy designed for children with developmental disabilities can help with pelvic floor dysfunction, such as urinary leaks, bedwetting, constipation and bowel movements.

A handbook is available for families using services from MMI Departments of Occupational and Physical Therapy. This resource provides policy and procedure information for appointments and service-related FAQs in both Spanish and English.

Department Mission

The mission of MMI’s Department of Occupational Therapy is to help children and adults with developmental disabilities and sensorimotor challenges participate successfully in everyday activities, utilizing evidence based practice and family-centered care, to provide clinical training to the next generation of practitioners and to support research activities that promote clinical excellence.
