Cancer is a common occurrence. However, some families may have more than their share of cancer diagnoses. Our board-certified, licensed genetic counselors are trained to sort out multiple cancer diagnoses in a family through the use of extensive family history and genetics risk-assessment models to determine if genetic testing may benefit a family.
Hereditary Cancer Clinics offer discussion of personal and family cancer histories. Risk assessments based on these histories are discussed, along with any recommendations for genetic testing for hereditary cancer syndromes.
Appointments are available for individuals affected with cancer and/or their family members.
The following is a list of common indications for cancer genetic counseling:
- Bilateral cancer in paired organs
- Cancer diagnosed before age 50
- Concerns/questions about cancer risk in unaffected relatives
- Families with specific cancer clusters (breast and ovarian cancer, or colon and endometrial cancer, for example)
- Family member with a known genetic mutation
- More than one primary cancer in the same individual
- Rare cancers or tumors (male breast cancer, pheochromocytoma, or retinoblastoma, for example)
- Three or more family members with the same cancer
Cancer genetic counseling services are available at several locations throughout the Omaha area. Additionally, cancer genetic counselors are available to see patients at our outreach clinic in the greater Nebraska area and in Sioux City, Iowa.
