In order to promote open access to research data, many funding agencies require research data produced as part of a funded project to be made publicly available. Many agencies have instituted requirements for data sharing and formal data management plans, including, but not limited to:
- National Institutes of Health: Data Sharing Policy: Supports the sharing of research data and expects researchers funded at $500,000 or more to include a data sharing plan in their grant proposals.
- US Department of Defense (DoD) Data Management Strategy
- "Sharing Data, Information, and Information Technology (IT) Services in the Department of Defense", 08/05/2013
- DoD Net-Centric Data Strategy
Memorandum by John P. Stenbit, May 9, 2003. The DoD Net-Centric Strategy provides a key enabler of the Department's Transformation by establishing the foundation for managing the Department's data in a net-centric environment. - Guidance for Implementing Net-Centric Data Sharing

Memorandum by Teri Takai, March 28, 2013. - DoD Guidelines on Data Quality Management

- Center for Disease Control (CDC) Data Storage, Security and Confidentiality Guidelines
- Center for Disease Control (CDC) / ATSDR Policy on Releasing and Sharing Data
- National Science Foundation (NSF) Data Management Plan Requirements: As an extension of the NSF Data Sharing Policy, new grant proposals must include a supplementary data management plan of no more than 2 pages.
Need help? See our pages on writing an NIH or NSF data management plan and data management plans in general.
For information regarding other agencies, check the funding agency's website or email us for help.
For information on requirements for other kinds of research output (i.e., research papers, article manuscripts), see the UNMC page on Research Funder Policies.
