2018 Schedule of Events

The Vice Chancellor for Research has teamed with UNeMed, UNeHealth, McGoogan Library, Faculty Development, the Academy of Interprofessional Educators, and Nebraska Medicine to celebrate the achievements of our Inventors and Researchers with an exciting month of activities.

Seminars and workshops are planned on a variety of topics of interest to faculty, staff, and students.

Jennifer Larsen, MD will present tips for preparing a 30 second, 1 minute, and 5 minute summary when talking to the public.  This session will include time for personal preparation and practice delivery.
10/9, noon - 1P PDD 1002 "Lessons Learned from Developing Scholarship in Education Research" In lieu of the regular October Quarterly meeting the Academy will hear personal stories and tips on developing education research from Dr. Kim Schenarts and Dr. PJ Schenarts. To celebrate the establishment of the Small Animal Bio-imaging Center, join the Comparative Medicine staff on a tour of the facility to see what capabilities and technology this new center has to offer for your research! Tour groups will form near the main entrance to the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, where staff will escort groups to the facility to begin the tour.

10/15, 11 - noon MSC 2018 "NHANES Data: Treasure Trove for Biomedical Research" 
presented by Robert Hoyt, MD, FACP, Adjunct Associate Professor UNMC College of Allied Health Professions. Clinical research mandates that data is easy to obtain, is realistic and easy to mine. Dr. Hoyt discusses the multiple advantages of using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data. He will focus on a recent compilation of 4 data periods that resulted in 41,000 patients and 1100 attributes. He will discuss the three ways that this data can be accessed: Data Dryad, Harvard Data Explorer and Data World. "BRCA1: A Personal Perspective"
We’ve all heard the story of Angelina Jolie and her surprising decision to have a preventive double mastectomy, and recent advances in genetic testing have made this scenario more common, even here at UNMC. Join Rick Blum, of the Department of Ob/Gyn, and his wife and daughters, as they share their journey to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of cancer-preventing surgery. Dr. Jennifer Griffin (Ob/Gyn) will also discuss the indications for genetic counseling and the impact it has on families. Sponsored by the Olson Center for Women’s Health. Join Christian Minter, MSLIS, and Emily Glenn, MSLS, to get a jump-start on the basics of organizing your approach and using tools for systematic reviews. By the end of this session, participants will be able to describe the systematic review process and locate resources to support the completion of a systematic review. Farah Karimi, MISS, Information Systems Specialist with Elsevier, will demonstrate new features in PURE, the Research Nebraska collaboration tool.  This session will focus on Allied Health Professions although all faculty members are welcome to participate. Faculty participants are encouraged to bring a laptop to follow along as Karimi demonstrates how to refine your profile to identify funding opportunities, add missing publications, and increase your visibility to students and collaborators using altmetrics.

The first annual Graduate Medical Education research meeting will include poster presentations by UNMC residents and fellows on their research, conducted in areas such as patient safety/quality improvement, education, clinical outcomes, health policy, basic science, business aspects of health care, or global health. Food and drink provided.
10/17, 7P The Slowdown, 729 N 14th Street "Omaha Science Café: Domestic Violence" 
Science Cafés involve a face-to-face conversation with scientists and others in the community about current topics. The topic of this month’s café will be on domestic violence, with this presentation given in partnership with the Women’s Center for Advancement, the designated direct service provider for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Douglas County. They are dedicated to helping clients stay safe and grow strong by addressing both their immediate safety needs and their long-term self-sufficiency. Pizza will be provided to the first 50 people.

Day one of a two-day joint colloquium between the Chronic HIV and Aging in NeuroAIDS (CHAIN) Center and the Nebraska Center for Substance Abuse Research (NCSAR). The goal of this event is to bring together leaders in the fields to discuss emerging topics, foster new ideas and collaborations, and educate new and established investigators. Offered as a free webinar.

This special session of the Quarterly Clinical Research Coordinators meeting will discuss the clinical research subject recruitment goals for the campus, the IRB requirements regarding recruitment efforts, as well as give strategies for success by highlighting what recruitment options are currently available.
10/23, 4P - 5P UNO, 230 Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center  "Interdisciplinary Collaboration & Community Engaged Research" 
Lessons learned working in and across disciplinary boundaries, a discussion of medical humanities research lead by Stacey Springs, PhD. Dr. Springs is an AHRQ K12 Scholar in Comparative Effectiveness and Patient-Centered Outcomes Research in the Center for Evidence Synthesis in Health and an Investigator in the Department of Health Services, Policy & Practice at Brown University School of Public Health. She also serves as an Engaged Scholars Faculty Fellow in the Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University and completed a fellowship in Bioethics at Harvard Medical School.  Her work focuses on the evidence based practice in newborn medicine and pediatric pain management, shared decision making and the maternal/infant dyad and the ethical implications of exceptionalizing research vulnerable populations.

Jacqueline Crawley, PhD, Endowed Chair and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of California Davis School of Medicine, will present a seminar on animal behavior research and how she uses these methods for her research into Autism.

She has many years of experience working with pharmaceutical companies and will discuss how researchers can tap this industry to further their research.
10/26, 5P MSC Linder Reading Room UNeMed’s 3D Printing Invent-a-Thon Presentations" 
The final presentations by those who participated in the multi-day “Invent-a-Thon,” which invites teams of high school students to design and 3D print a solution to a real-world healthcare problem. Prizes will be awarded to the winning team, with a reception to follow.
