Why study orthodontics?
The UNMC Orthodontics Residency program is for individuals seeking specialization in proper, safe tooth movement (orthodontics) and the guidance of dental, jaw and facial development (dentofacial orthopedics). Orthodontists experience the privilege and joy of enhancing their patients smiles to improve their oral function and appearance and to increase their self-confidence. Orthodontics is a rewarding and challenging career that offers a wealth of benefits, including building relationships with patients.
Why the UNMC College of Dentistry Orthodontic Residency Program?
Our intricately designed residency program equips residents with the knowledge and confidence to become leading orthodontists. The program, located at the UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln, provides residents with extensive clinical experience working alongside nationally renowned faculty members. Our residents have rewarding experiences treating a socially and economicially diverse patient base.
Residents also receive hands-on experience through multiple rotations:
- Children’s Nebraska - Receive hospital-based clinical experiences focused on treating children and adolescents with extensive dental restorative needs; physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities; cleft and craniofacial conditions; and complex medical conditions; and
- Boystown National Research Hospital Craniofacial Clinic - Provide life-changing care for infants and children with oral-facial clefts and other diseases, disorders or injuries.
Residents also perform cutting-edge research with guidance from our faculty and provide clinical instruction for third- and fourth-year dental students. They receive a program stipend to help offset educational costs, vacation and sick leave, and a flexible benefit package.
Student Story
"I chose UNMC because of the tight knit community. We received the one-on-one attention that is really important. I learned so much from my fellow residents, as well as from the faculty and the orthodontists in the community who help at the college. They had a lot of different treatment modalities and I really enjoyed those eye-opening patient care experiences." - Dr. Anna Schoettger, Schoettger Orthodontics, Lincoln
