Why the UNMC Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Program?
The UNMC Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) program is designed to train recent dental school graduates to deliver comprehensive dental care to a wide range of patients with varying needs, in different clinical environments, at an advanced level of skill and complexity beyond what was accomplished in their predoctoral education. Residents receive advanced training in their areas of interest, including endodontics, prosthodontics, orthodontics, oral surgery, periodontics, pediatric dentistry, implantology, TMD and more.
Our residents gain extensive hospital-based experience providing comprehensive, emergency and multidisciplinary oral health care to a wide variety of patients, including those with special needs. They function effectively and efficiently in multiple health care settings within interdisciplinary health care teams. They also understand the oral health needs of communities and engage in community service.
The program is based at the Durham Outpatient Center in Omaha, and residents rotate to Federally Qualified Health Centers across Nebraska, as well as the UNMC College of Dentistry in Lincoln and Children’s Nebraska in Omaha.
Residents receive a stipend and benefits package. GME-eligible postgraduate students are eligible for a flexible benefits package, which includes choices among health, life and disability insurance.
Student Story
"After I finished dental school, I wanted another year of mentorship and hands-on experience to build on my skills and knowledge. That’s what I’m getting at UNMC in all areas of dentistry. I didn’t have a lot of experience with special needs patients before UNMC, and that has been a really rewarding demographic to work with." - Dr. Maureen Bigsby, Omaha
