Title: Untitled
Location: Cuzco, Peru
Submitted by Elizabeth Buschkemper
Description:
"I didn’t
need or want the hand knit woolen socks this woman was so persistently,
almost desperately, trying to sell, but I was curious why her new baby had
coca leaves stuck on his forehead. She explained he was very sick, and hoped
these herbal plasters would help as she couldn’t afford a doctor or
medicine. I touched the baby’s skin… burning hot… and then I bought a dozen
socks. The next day I returned. Mom showed me a bottle of Amoxicillin and
gave me another pair of socks. The baby gave me a smile." |
