Cap-Haitien, Haiti
Submitted by Jill Hasner
Category: Students/Residents
Description:
"This
picture was taken in June, 2002. A friend and I had taken the bus to the
northern side of the island to see some sites. Cap-Haitien is the second
largest city in Haiti and was the original capital when the French still
governed the country. There is a bit of history here, but even more
striking was the view of homes as we walked across a bridge on one of
the city's main streets." |

Independence Day
Celebration in Perú
Location:
Lima, Perú
Submitted by Ronald Shikiya
Category: Students/Residents
Description:
"This
picture was taken at El Pueblo Resort, Convention Hotel and Casino in
Lima, Perú, during a celebration for Peruvian Independence Day (July 28th).
In the center you can see a tree with several strings and stuff hanging
out of it. This is actually kind of a piñata tree, the stuff hanging out
are gifts, T-shirts, balloons, candies, etc. While people dance and have
fun around the tree (at a safe distance), each person picks a string
(some strings will have a gift at the other end, some do not) and
someone will be hitting the tree with an ax and pass the ax to the next
person. This will continue on until the tree falls, then the people come
towards the tree to get their treats." |
