The Earth, To God
Location: At
a ‘Durga Puja’ organized by Bengali community in Kansas City
Submitted by
Ajay Ohja
Category: Students/Residents
Description:
"A lot of
people ask me about Hinduism and about all different gods and goddesses
worshipped. Different Hindus worship different deities, but this is
common to all. It is symbolic of offering all things available on Earth
during our worship. This is a way of thanking God for providing us with
this Earth and all things on it. The beauty lies in the way this is
decorated." |

the woman streaked across her cheeks to complete their show of
traditional Shhar costume." |

Modaline
Location:
Kenscoff, Haiti
Submitted by
Jill Hasner
Category: Students/Residents
Description:
"This
picture was taken the Summer of 2002 in Kenscoff, Haiti. We were working
at an orphanage called God’s Littlest Angels. At the time there was 40
children under the age of three being cared for. Many of the children
had been brought to the orphanage by parents who were unable to care for
them. Others had been brought in by hospitals who were unequipped to
care for malnourished and premature babies. Sadly, the majority of these
children had been found abandoned on the streets and brought to the
orphanage because no one else would take them." |
Title: Sharing a Good Read
Location: Bhaktapur Nepal
Submitted by Meredith Hammans
Category: Faculty/Staff
Description:
"I love this
shot! I was trekking with a literacy program in Nepal when I spied this
group of boys taking a break to share a good read. I love the soft
lighting and the typical “Nepali squat” the main boy is doing. I’ve
tried it—impossible!" |

"This picture
is dark, but still speaks volumes. Our nimble jungle guides were letting
us rest during a trek back to our base community when I snapped this
picture. Surrounded by the trees, rocks and mud, I think this conveys
their strength and ability to conquer even a portion of the world." |

Submitted by
Ronald Shikiya
Category: Students/Residents
Description:
"This picture
was taken in a tour, way back in 1994. I went with my undergrad prom to
a conference at Universidad San Antonio de Abad del Cuzco. The picture
is actually at Macchu Picchu, the lost city of the Inca Empire. Located
11,000 feet closer to the stars, south center of Perú. Built entirely of
stone, I was flabbergasted to stand before such an incredible view. This
place is one of the main touristic attraction in Perú, which hosts
tourists from around the world."

"I met
with this group of eighth grade girls while trekking with a literacy
non-profit. We spoke for a few hours over tea, chapattis and marmalade.
Their education was evident in their wonderful self-confidence, which is
quite unusual for female Nepalis. They nick-named me “Sushmita,” but
they’re the true old beauties."

Description:
"The
Oriental city of Bangkok harmonizes both traditional and modern
cultures. This 5:00 AM picture shows a golden Buddha ornately decorated
with descending sizes of elephants on the parapet and worshipping
flowers and ambrosia on the pedestal; however, this has harmonized with
the monorail transit commuting people kept me in awe."

Rue de Haiti
Location:
Cap-Haitien, Haiti
Submitted by
Jill Hasner
Category: Students/Residents
Description:
"This
picture was taken the Summer of 2002. It very accurately portrays many
of the city streets in Haiti. They were quite narrow and filled with
potholes, which always made for a head-jerking ride. People would dump
their used cooking and bath water into the streets, so where ever you
walked you could be sure it was next to a trail of water. We were always
sure to wash our feet after we’d been out in sandals… we were pretty
sure water wasn’t all we were walking through."
