Individuals working with ionizing radiation can receive radiation dose either
externally (e.g., radiation emitted from radioactive material or a device outside
the body) or internally (from radioactivity deposited within the body due to
ingestion, inhalation, or absorption of radioactive material). To determine the
external radiation dose personnel monitoring devices (dosimeters or “radiation
badges”) are used, while bioassays are used to determine internal radiation dose.
Additional information can be found in Section B-5 of the Radiation Safety Manual.
