Title: "Sunset Sail"
Location: Playa Los Muertos, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Submitted by Michael Sather
Category: Student/ResidentDescription:
"We were
sitting on the beach under a palona and just looking out into the bay.
As we watched, the sun began to set and the sail boat came into view. I
wondered how beautiful the sunset would be on board the vessel and how
the city looked from the bay with the sun at your back. It then struck
me how funny it was that a beach so named from a deadly battle between
gold and silver smugglers (“The Beach of the Dead”) could have such a
gorgeous sunset." |

Title: "Sudanes Refugee Woman and Child"
Location:Trinity Lutheran Church
Submitted by Jodi Hume
Category: Student/Resident
Description:
"I took
this photo during a Sudanese refugee church service. I have been
studying the Sudanese refugee population and the mental health issues
within this population. Most Sudanese women have 5-6 children or more. I
chose to photograph this woman because of the traditional colorful
clothing that her and her son displayed. The clothing represents the
struggle for all refugees to maintain the traditional culture, while
learning a new one. Many Sudanese refugee women suffer from depression,
which is associated with the stress of relocation and role changes." |

will strengthen the mud brick walls, and be woven into baskets within
which to put a meal." |

"Here an
elderly Haitian man braces for a “picki,” an injection of an

of my family’s origin." |
Title: "Las Tortillas"
Location: Rancho Palma Real, Mexico
Submitted by Michael Sather
Category: Student/Resident
Description:
"This
friendly mexicana was working away making homemade tortillas from
scratch. We were taking a break for lunch from horseback riding in the
Sierra Madre. She was making these tortillas for our fajitas. It was
amazing to see the process of crushing the maiz to make a paste and then
baking the tortillas. It was amazing to see the human work and effort
that went into a process that we either think nothing about, or see as
simplistic and take for granted. It made me appreciate my lunch." |
