Title: Generations
Location: Trinidad, Cuba
Submitted by Bud Shaw
Category: Faculty/Staff
Description:
"I was trying to get a portrait
of this young girl who kept staring at me. In my first shot, she is
alone. I bracketed the exposure for the second but realized too late
someone had walked into the frame. I shot a third frame in frustration.
Of the three, this is my favorite. The title suggests what I think of
when I see the photo." |
Title: Gina and Friends
Location: Managua, Nicaragua
Submitted by Bradley Ellis
Category: Student/Resident
Description:
"Gina Wilson-Ramírez was one of
two UNMC students to go to Nicaragua for the first time to do a public
health project. She is now a resident in New Mexico. She came with us on
the March, 2001 trip and is seen here with three Nicaraguan boys, two of
them still drying their teeth after a fluoride treatment." |

Title: Selian Hospital Pediatric Ward
Location: Tanzania
Submitted by Betsy Buschkemper
Category: Faculty/Staff
Description:
"This child is recovering from
malaria - the top reason for pediatric admission and a frequent cause of
death in Tanzania. Although hospitalization costs less than two dollars
a day, many impoverished parents must make a difficult choice between
providing medical care for one sick child or food for the rest." |
Title: Niña, Blue Dress
Location: Managua, Nicaragua
Submitted by Matthew Latacha
Category: Student/Resident
Description:
"This photo was taken while
vaccinating children in an impoverished area of Managua. Notice that
amidst the squalor, the child is wearing what is most likely her finest
dress, simply for some medical students to give her an injection. Notice
also the rusty chairs along side the house. These chairs were always
brought out to us when we entered the cardboard and wooden shacks people
lived in. This hospitality to us was indeed moving." |

Title: Nyhaven Canal, Copenhagen
Location: Copenhagen, Denmark
Submitted by Catherine Todero
Category: Faculty Staff
Description:
"The photo is Nyhaven canal at
dusk. This is a gathering place for social activities with many bars and
restaurants. The Flybaden ferry in the distance is coming into port. The
canals, ferry and ships represent Copenhagen's connection to the sea and
its history." |
Title: Niña, Black & White
Location: Managua, Nicaragua
Submitted by Matthew Latacha
Category: Student/Resident
Description:
"I took the photo of this
beautiful little girl in one of the poorest areas of Managua. The house
in which she stands in front of was one of the nicer dwellings, as it
had cement walls and wooden pillars like the one she is leaning against.
Notice the open sewer that runs in front of the house. This little girl
struck me with her face almost void of any expression whatsoever. One
look at her surroundings explains her apparent sadness." |

Title: The Great Wall
Location: Near Beijing, China
Submitted by Ronda Stevens
Category: Faculty/Staff
Description:
"This is me and my family on The
Great Wall of China near Beijing. A European with whom we communicated
via gestures used our camera to take the photo. People from all over the
world were sharing the experience of being in a place of legend, once
closed off to the rest of the world. We were awed and euphoric! The
Chinese people we encountered frequently wanted our daughter to
pose with them for photos." |
Title: (untitled)
Location: Falmouth, Jamaica-Community Clinic
Submitted by Christopher Valentine
Category: Student/Resident
Description:
"This photo was taken in March,
1997 outside of the free clinic in Falmouth, Jamaica, where 19 med
students, a nurse and 2 MDs and 2 DDSs spent spring break seeing dozens
of patients a day. I believe this boy was brought in for a minor injury.
What I liked about the photo was the expression on the man's face. I
think that the boy laying in the med student's lap was more important
than the definitive treatment." |

Title: If the Walls Could Talk
Location: León, Nicaragua
Submitted by Wendy Begg
Category: Student/Resident
Description:
"A city taking a stand against
the Somoza dictatorship, León and its people have taken a beating in
the past. Seeing these bullet holes forced the reality of this situation
into my mind. It shows the determination of a people, the desire to live
freely. Was I willing to take a stand like this for something?" |

Title: Mountain of Joy
Location: Estes Park, Colorado
Submitted by Sinjan De
Category: Student/Resident
Description:
"India has Himalayas on the
north and Indian Ocean in the south. Going to the foothills, the joy of
seeing a snowcapped mountain is overwhelming. I found the same
excitement when we went to Estes Park. As my friends were busy filling
gas in the car tank, I sneaked out and took this snap." |
Title: Where There's a Will, There's a Way
Location: Trujillo, Colon, Honduras
Submitted by Jennifer Bracken
Category: Student/Resident
Description:
"This is the classroom of my
friend who is a volunteer teacher in Honduras. The one classroom
structure is open air and class is held rain or shine. The school is
part of a large community of five homes that raise about 50 orphans.
Despite the lack of many supplies, the children are taught how to read
and right and learn the value of an education." |

Title: River Giants
Location: along the Spree River in Berlin, Germany
Submitted by Beth Augustine
Category: Student/Resident
Description:
"These figures really are as
giant-sized as they look. They were put on the river by a large computer
company nearby. They lie on the former-Eastern part of Berlin, near the
Berlin Wall and represent the struggle for freedom between men." |
