Planning, training, conducting exercises
UNMC colleges and departments respond to emergencies by using the emergency procedures maintained by the Department of Environmental Health and Safety. When incidents increase in magnitude, coordination of communication and resources may be needed for response and recovery efforts. The Office of Emergency Management facilitates planning, training and exercises in order to prepare for campus response and recovery.
UNMC follows the National Incident Management System (NIMS) guidance maintained by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The NIMS model for incident management uses the Incident Command System (ICS) for command and control, which is also supported by local and state responders. As such, the university follows an ICS model for organizational direction and control during an incident.
