Message from the Director of Career Services

Whether you are an MPH student, a COPH graduate or a potential employer of COPH students and alumni, I have been in your shoes, at least a little bit. Neither of my parents attended college, much less graduate school, so I navigated a lot of my own educational and career milestones with the help of a number of mentors and advisors. Now, in my role as Director of Career Services I am able to give back to the field of public health by helping new public health practitioners find their career paths.

I work collaboratively with faculty, staff and students to provide career development opportunities and guidance to students. While I can help students tremendously as they are applying for job opportunities, it is never too early to begin thinking about career development! I encourage students to make an appointment with me sometime during their first year of study so that we can make sure they are making the most of their time as a student, setting themselves up for future opportunities.

I also connect with employers throughout the region to identify professional opportunities for COPH graduates. I have been on the employer side of the hiring process, so I understand the importance of finding the right fit. Employers can contact me any time if they have questions about the skill sets and value add that COPH students and alumni would bring to their organization.

I truly believe that every COPH student and graduate has an important role to play in promoting optimal health and well-being, in Nebraska, the U.S. and around the world. I look forward to helping you thrive while here, and throughout your careers.

Brenda Nickol, MPH, CPH
