Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

Our committee reviews protocols, monitors ongoing research, and provides guidance to maintain the highest standards of animal welfare.

UNMC’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee is comprised of scientists, non-scientists, veterinarians, public members, consultants and committee staff members. The diverse committee allows for the objective analysis and ethical evaluation of animal research from multiple perspectives.

Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee approval is required for all activities using live vertebrate animals for teaching or research conducted at UNMC.

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee is dedicated to ensuring that faculty, students and staff understand their role in fulfilling UNMC’s commitment to the highest ethical standards for the best care and most humane utilization of laboratory animals in teaching and research.

Formal Assurance

UNMC has provided a formal assurance to the Department of Health and Human Services that UNMC will comply with the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (revised as of August, 2002). This guarantee applies to all research, research training, teaching and biological testing involving live vertebrate animals conducted by anyone on the premises of UNMC. It also applies to research conducted elsewhere by faculty, students, staff of UNMC that is performed in connection with the investigators' institutional responsibilities.

In order to comply with this assurance, UNMC has established an institutional committee competent to oversee the institution's animal program, facilities, and projects involving the use of animals. Under the provisions of the Public Health Service Policy, this committee has been designated as the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee is devoted to the principle of carrying out meaningful scientific research through the use of laboratory animals in accordance with humane standards.
