Iraklis Pipinos, MD

Dr. Pipinos is a vascular surgeon and professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the chief of vascular surgery at the Omaha VA Medical Center.

Dr. Pipinos received his medical degree from the University of Crete School of Medicine in Greece and completed his surgical residency and vascular surgery fellowship at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He also completed a mini-fellowship in endovascular surgery at Stanford University Medical Center in Stanford, California.

He has significant experience with both open and endovascular surgery, including the treatment of peripheral artery disease, carotid stenosis and abdominal aortic aneurysms. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Vascular Surgery.

Dr. Pipinos is active in cardiovascular research, and is the co-principal investigator of a large collaborative, NIH- and VA-funded basic and translational science research group. The focus of his research work is the development of regenerative medicine and biomechanical assistance strategies for damaged muscles and nerves in the legs of patients suffering from peripheral artery disease (hardening and blockages of the arteries supplying the legs).

He is the recipient of many awards including the Charles C. Guthrie Award by the Midwestern Vascular Surgical Society, the Lifeline Foundation Research Award by the Society for Vascular Surgery and three outstanding teacher and mentor awards by his trainees.

Research Interests
Dr. Pipinos’ research focuses on vascular biology as well as human biomechanics and exoskeletons. He currently serves as a co-principal investigator of a large collaborative, NIH- and VA- funded group evaluating the pathophysiology of the myopathy and neuropathy of the ischemic legs with peripheral artery disease, the functional impairment it produces in patients and the optimal ways to diagnose and treat it.
