Dr. Mammen is a professor of surgery and chief of surgical oncology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
He grew up in Kaplan, Louisiana, a small town in the heart of Acadiana. He graduated summa cum laude with a double major in history and medical science from Boston University. He went on to medical school at Boston University. After a surgery residency at the University of Cincinnati, he completed a clinical fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He additionally was awarded a PhD in molecular and cellular physiology from the University of Cincinnati.
He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society for Surgical Oncology. Dr. Mammen is involved in the leadership of several medical organizations including the American College of Surgeons, the International College of Surgery, and the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Mammen has been actively involved in basic science and translational research focusing on the signaling mechanisms determining cancer cell survival/stemness.
He also involved at the institutional, national, and international level in designing clinical trials focused on the treatment of melanoma, soft tissue sarcomas, and breast cancer.
