Education

The Division of Acute Care Surgery at UNMC is a highly skilled team of surgeons that is dually board certified surgery and surgical critical care working in collaboration with subspecialists to provide the highest quality care to traumatically injured and critically ill patients. Along with a busy clinical service, our physicians are committed to educating medical students, residents and fellows through bedside teaching, multidisciplinary teaching conferences, simulation and collaborative research. 

Acute care surgery is an integral part of the general surgery residency program at UNMC, with rotations on trauma, emergency general surgery and surgical critical care throughout the curriculum. 

The surgical critical care fellowship is a one-year ACGME-accredited fellowship for residents with at least five years of ACGME-accredited general surgery training in the United States. Our fellowship program provides the highest level of training possible, with progressive fellow autotomy and comprehensive rotations.  

Continuing Education Opportunities

The Nebraska Acute Care Education Program provides high quality and interactive education to clinicians in Nebraska and across the country, improving the quality of care provided to injured and critically ill patients and their families. 

Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma
This course is for mid-level and senior surgical residents, trauma and acute care surgical fellows, and any surgeon who wishes a review of this anatomy. A course manual provides an overview of surgical exposures in four key anatomic areas: extremities, head and neck, thoracic, and abdomen and pelvis. The one-day, cadaver-based course follows this modular, body region approach.
Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses
This course educates nurses on synchronized approaches to care of the trauma patient. It is taught concurrently with approved Advanced Trauma Life Support courses. Benefits include an educational, team building, collaborative, synchronized approach to trauma care as trauma nurses share didactic lectures with the physician attendees of the Advanced Trauma Life Support course. Physicians and nurses caring for trauma patients have the opportunity to share a common language and approach to trauma care.
Advanced Trauma Life Support
This course is designed for providers (physicians, fellows, residents, advanced practice providers) who first attend to the injured patient and has the greatest opportunity to impact outcome. The two-day Advanced Trauma Life Support student course teaches medical core content in an interactive format with hand-on skills sessions in simulated trauma settings.
Basic Endovascular Skills for Trauma
This course is for surgeons. Participants learn endovascular techniques such as resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta to temporize life-threatening hemorrhage. This course offers hands-on training with perfused cadavers including ultrasound-guided common femoral arterial access, percutaneous and open cannulation of the common femoral arterial and common femoral arterial repair.
Disaster Management and Emergency Preparedness
This course teaches planning methods, preparedness, and medical management of trauma patients in mass casualty disaster situations. Through lecture and interactive scenarios, you’ll learn incident command terminology, principles of disaster triage, injury patterns, and availability of assets for support.
Stop the Bleed
This is a program that teaches participants evidence-based, life-saving bleeding control techniques shown to dramatically increase survival rates in situations requiring hemorrhage control. Skills taught during the course focus on achieving bleeding control with a direct pressure, wound packing and compression, and placement of a tourniquet.
Fundamentals of Critical Care Support
This course is designed to educate physicians, physicians-in-training, nurses, and other health care providers who may or may not be skilled in critical care but who must care for such patients during early stabilization and in anticipation of the arrival of an intensivist, specialist or pending transfer of the patient to a tertiary center. It provides critical care knowledge, guidance for decision-making, and practice in clinical procedures by addressing fundamental management of critical care patients in the first 24 hours of care.
Rural Trauma Team Development Course
Specifically for clinicians in non-trauma centers, this course educates participants on the recommended team approach to the assessment, resuscitation, and transfer of the trauma patient. Components of the course address topics such as airway, breathing, circulation, disability, thermal injury, transfer to definitive care, special considerations, performance improvement and patient safety, and teamwork and communication.
