Community Engagement, Culture and Advocacy

Community Engagement

The Department of Surgery strives to engage communities in educational, healthcare and patient programs and bring awareness to opportunities and resources available for our community. We are committed to identifying needs to enable attainment of new surgical programs and accessibility.

Charity Evans, MD

Charity Evans, MD, serves as the Vice Chair of Community Engagement to provide strategic and operational direction with oversight of community-facing efforts through Community Engagement, including community health programming, organizational/service promotion, and the growth of patient access and volume. Dr. Evans develops and manages implementation of organizational efforts to expand the reach of the Department of Surgery with strategies and tactics designed to improve patient access/volume and community health status.

Culture and Advocacy

The Department of Surgery is dedicated to excellence in patient experience by fostering a culture of growth, collaboration and support within the department. We are committed to addressing gaps in surgical care access by increasing awareness internally through education and externally by developing robust community-hospital partnerships.

Quan Ly, MD

Quan Ly, MD, serves as Vice Chair of Culture and Advocacy and is the strategic leader responsible for cultivating a positive and inclusive organizational culture where faculty, trainees and staff are motivated, engaged and aligned with the department’s values and goals. Dr. Ly works tirelessly to actively listen and partners with underserved, vulnerable and at-risk populations, establishes awareness of their unique needs, and advocates to improve access to resources. Dr. Ly was the recipient of the 2023 OneWorld Milagros award in recognition of her work with increasing access to cancer screening. Dr. Ly teams with other faculty and personnel in the department to inspire and train physician leaders who promote wellness, excellence and compassion in the surgeons of tomorrow.

Both Drs. Evans and Ly partner closely with the Chairman of Surgery, Vice Chairs and stakeholders to shape, drive and deliver community engagement, culture, advocacy and internal communications.
