Insurance Waiver Criteria

Waivers can be completed approximately 14 days before the start of the semester’s classes but must be filed by the deadline of 14 days following the first day of classes. Students who had an approved waiver for the Fall term do not need to submit a waiver for the Spring term.

The waiver can be completed electronically (once the student is registered for their fall or spring semester classes and their tuition bill is calculated) on the students' UNMC MyRecords system on the home page.

To qualify for a waiver, the student's current plan must meet or exceed all Affordable Care Act requirements (unlimited lifetime maximum for minimum essential health benefits, coverage for pre-existing conditions, out of pocket maximum not to exceed $9,450 per individual or $18,900 per family) and provide coverage for non-emergency essential services in the state of Nebraska.

Domestic Students

Medicaid plans issued outside the state of Nebraska or Iowa and HMO plans that do not have in-network providers in the Omaha, NE area do not qualify for a waiver. Short-term plans, supplemental policies, discount plans, hospital indemnity and other limited benefit plans and policies issued outside the U.S. do not meet the criteria. Coverage must remain in effect for the entire period for which the waiver applies.

International Students

International students must also provide proof of coverage for unlimited medical evacuation and repatriation of remains to your home country. A supplemental policy may be purchased under the Global Travel Services card.

J1 students must have a deductible of $500 or less per accident/injury.

International students with coverage under an approved government sponsored/guaranteed program with a current financial guarantee on file with the university may also qualify for a waiver. If you have SACM coverage, please submit your financial guarantee to the Student Accounts Office. Approved plans include the following:

  • Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission (SACM)
  • Embassy of Oman
  • Kuwait
  • United Arab Emirates (UAE)
