Breast Imaging

3D mammography enables radiology technologists to obtain images of the breast from multiple angles.

In the breast imaging division, our fellowship trained radiologists interpret images of the breast in order to diagnose and help treat medical conditions of the breast. They read mammograms, breast ultrasounds, and breast MRIs, and perform diagnostic breast procedures that can help to diagnose and treat breast cancer.

A breast radiologist can perform diagnostic procedures, such as minimally invasive biopsies, to diagnose an abnormal finding in the breast seen on imaging. These biopsies can be performed with ultrasound, mammogram or MRI-guidance.

Residents will rotate through the breast imaging division of our department. When their residency is complete, residents will have acquired the following skills and knowledge:

  • Acquire basic knowledge of basic breast anatomy and breast pathology on mammography, ultrasound and MRI.
  • Acquire a knowledge of the BI-RADS lexicon to be used in reports and to communicate.
  • Feel confident reading screening mammograms.
  • Understand the workup of a screening or clinical finding when performing a diagnostic mammogram.
  • Learn to correlate mammogram findings with ultrasound findings.
  • Feel confident performing an ultrasound on a patient with correct orientation of probe and proper imaging techniques for maximizing visualization.
  • Assist in specialized procedures, such as localization, ultrasound-guided aspiration/biopsy, stereotactic biopsy, MRI biopsy.
  • Demonstrate compassion, integrity and respect for patients and demonstrate concern for patient needs and comfort when doing procedure.
  • Communicate results or other findings with non-radiology providers.

Rebecca DeVries, DO, Breast Imaging Division Chief

Breast imaging is a rewarding specialty with patients who show gratitude. Dr. DeVries hates diagnosing cancer, but loves that it can be found early, giving a woman a chance at a long and fulfilling life. Breast imaging is a great combination of hands-on, as well as time in the reading room.
