2024 World Health Day
The Center for Global Health and Development held its second annual recognition of World Health Day on Thursday, April 4, advocating for global health awareness. In recognition of the vital interplay between global and local health, the event emphasized the significance of collective efforts in addressing worldwide health challenges. As the world grapples with ongoing health challenges, the 2nd Annual World Health Day at UNMC served as a catalyst for collaboration and dialogue. It brought together diverse perspectives and expertise, fostering a shared commitment to improving global health outcomes in pursuit of a healthier, more equitable future for all.
Speaker Biographies
Tajudeen Raji MD, MPH, FWACP, Chatham House Fellow
Dr. Raji is a Medical Doctor with postgraduate qualifications in Pediatrics and Public Health. He is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians and African Public Health Leaders Fellow of the Chatham House Royal Institute of International Affairs, UK. He has years of senior level experience in Child Health, Health System Management, Health System Strengthening, Health Diplomacy, Maternal and Child Health, and Health in Humanitarian Emergencies. He has lots of experience working in different settings in the developing world.
He is currently the Head of Public Health Institutes and Research at the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, African Union, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He coordinates the establishment and strengthening of National Public Health Institutes across the 55 African Union Member States. He coordinates the Africa CDC Health Workforce Development portfolio. He oversees the public health research agenda of the Africa CDC.
Peter Kilmarx, MD
Dr. Kilmarx is Acting Director of the Fogarty International Center and Acting Associate Director for International Research at the National Institutes of Health. He joined Fogarty as Deputy Director on July 1, 2015, and assumed his current roles on January 15, 2023.
Dr. Kilmarx is an expert on infectious disease research and HIV/AIDS prevention. During his tenure at Fogarty he has led analysis of NIH global health activities, built coalitions with high-level NIH and external stakeholders, and represented the Center and NIH in national and international forums. He co-lead an initiative to transform African health professional education and research, resulting in the formation of the African Association for Health Professions Education and Research, as well as the African Postdoctoral Training Initiative, which brings African postdoctoral fellows to NIH. He has also focused on efforts to increase equity in global health research and build global capacity for pandemic preparedness.
