Sheritta Strong

Sheritta A. Strong, MD, (she/her/hers) is an associate professor and director of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the UNMC Department of Psychiatry.  She also serves as the UNMC assistant vice chancellor for inclusion. As an Omaha native, she completed her education with a bachelor's degree from University of Nebraska Omaha, medical degree from UNMC, and residency training in the former combined Creighton-Nebraska Psychiatry Training Program. 

Dr. Strong had been the pre-clinical director for psychiatry in the College of Medicine for over 10 years and maintains her connection to students through student advising, mentoring, and serving as the faculty advisor for an inclusive campus-wide student group.  She co-wrote a book chapter in the Handbook of Psychiatric Education, 3rd Edition.  As a member of various national and local organizations, the National Medical Association and Black Psychiatrists of America, Dr. Strong is the main driver of the Great Plains Chapter of the NMA and a local group of Black women doctors called the Omaha Mocha Docs. 

Dr. Strong established her career caring for patients with a variety of severe emotional health conditions as she served on the Assertive Community Treatment team for about four years.  Another passion is community mental health and serving patients of diverse backgrounds with an appointment at the Charles Drew Health Center, a federally qualified health center in the heart of North Omaha.

She has written a number of papers and presented at national conferences on the topics of personal branding, inclusivity, equity, and other medical education topics, which includes the American Psychiatric Association's Townhall on Racism.  

Chairing the Inclusion and Equity Council, she serves at the campus level to build cultural humility and promote inclusive excellence.  As a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Strong has been honored with numerous national and local leadership and teaching awards, including the APA Nancy C.A. Roeske’s Award for Educational Excellence, UNMC Alumni Achievement Award, the Urban League African-America Achievement Award in Health, and the National Coalition of 100 Black Women’s Award for Health and Wellness.  

In the community, Dr. Strong has been a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc for more than 26 years where the main focus is “service to all mankind” and a member of the Omaha Chapter of the Links, Incorporated.  She enjoys spending time with family and enjoys karaoke and group exercise classes.
