New Postdoc Training
Postdoctoral Scholars are required to complete three training programs in their first year at UNMC to be eligible for reappointment.
Also, be sure to attend Postdoc Orientation, which is especially helpful to individuals new to UNMC.
Required Programs
An Individual Development Plan is an opportunity for a first-year postdoc to create a development plan in collaboration with their mentor. It is an opportunity to think seriously about what you hope to accomplish during your postdoctoral career and what your mentor expects of you. The platform gives you tools for setting plans to reach professional goals and provides many ways to make sure you stay on track.
The requirements to earn the certificate are:
- Complete all of the self-assessment exercises.
- Document that you have completed career exploration exercises.
- Identify a Plan A or Plan B long-term career goal.
- Set goals for advancing your career, developing skills and completing projects.
- Identify mentor(s).
After you have discussed your plan with your mentor, click on the box next to the final statement. Select Download and click Generate PDF to save a PDF of the certificate on your machine. You will upload this into Canvas to verify you completed the plan. Please note, neither myIDP nor AAAS will retain a record of this certificate.
The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative, a nationally-recognized source for research-related training, provides an extensive literature-based review of the NIH required Responsible Conduct in Research topics, includes numerous case studies and video exercises, and concludes each module with a content-based quiz.
You'll need to complete the training within three months of joining UNMC. Topics include:
- Mentoring
- Research Misconduct
- Data Management
- Authorship
- Peer Review

- Collaborative Research
- Using Animal Subjects in Research
- Research Involving Human Subjects
- Plagiarism
After completing all 10 CITI modules, you will need to log into Canvas and provide proof of completion with at least an 80% score in each module by uploading documentation into the RCR Course assignment.
After completing the online modules, you will participate in a Responsible Conduct in Research workshop consisting of a series of short lectures, discussions, and presentations of cases on scientific integrity and responsible conduct in research. Topics include:
- Authorship
- Collaborative Research
