Navigating Your First Year
Thank you for choosing UNMC for your postdoctoral education.
We hope your time here is productive, fulfilling and better prepares you for the next stage in your career. Make sure you read our arrival checklist to see what you should do on your first day on campus.
Orientation
Get acquainted with life at UNMC and Omaha by attending two orientations.
This hour-long orientation covers information on Sponsored Programs Administration, the Postdoctoral Association, UNeMed, and gives an overview of training opportunities and introduces postdocs to the valuable resources they have access to on campus.
Postdoc Orientation is normally held once a year in late summer.
This half-day event is an educational program for incoming staff and postdocs. It provides an overview of basic campus services, the benefits package, employee health, wellness, safety and mandatory compliance policies. You'll also learn about the history and culture of the University.
Be sure to also review the New Employee Orientation resources.
Required Training
Within the first year, all postdocs need to complete an Individual Development Plan, take online CITI training and attend an in-person workshop on Responsible Conduct in Research.
Annual Evaluations
The annual performance evaluation is a critical opportunity for a postdoctoral scholar to meet and discuss goals, objectives and performance with their mentor. Annual evaluations are conducted through UNeVal, the University of Nebraska's employee evaluation system.
The evaluation process is:
- The postdoc and their mentor receive a notification roughly two months before the evaluation is due.
- The postdoc initiates the process through a self-appraisal.
- The mentor completes their evaluation of the postdoc.
- The two meet and discuss the appraisal.
Since completion of the evaluation is a condition for contract renewal, it is critical that postdocs keep the Office of Postdoctoral Education informed about changes to their lab or mentor.
