About Us

Message from the Chair

Samuel Bierner, MD

We have seen exciting growth since the founding of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at UNMC in 2016, which coincided with the opening of the Omaha campus of Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital. We've added both an accredited residency and a brain injury fellowship, as well as world-class faculty members.

Our accredited categorical residency was the first in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in the upper Midwest region. Our brain injury fellowship through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education was just the 20th approved program in the country.

Our faculty provide patient care through UNMC's clinical partners, including Madonna and Nebraska Medicine. This provides opportunities for our trainees to work with a broad patient population. Our residents and medical students also have the opportunity for clinical research, with the assistance of the Madonna Institute for Rehabilitation Science and Engineering.

With these partners and through these opportunities to innovate, we are working together to improve the lives of Nebraskans with disabling conditions. We are proud of what we have accomplished, and we look forward to what we will achieve in the years to come.
