Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology
Our department offers a strong base in traditional academic activities, as well as innovations that will help define the future of diagnostic medicine, research and education in microbiology, immunology and pathology.
The department is made up of excellent faculty and is building on a long history of excellence as a part of the UNMC College of Medicine.
Education
Our department is committed to providing the best possible training to our medical students, graduate students, residents, fellows and postdoctorates in the areas of pathology, microbiology, immunology and related fields, whether it is in the classroom or laboratory.
Research
Our focus is on four primary research topics: bioinformatics, cancer biology, immunology and microbiology with considerable overlap among the 23 cutting-edge laboratories that work on both translational and basic science topics. We are leaders in applying basic science discoveries to identify diagnostic tools that will improve overall health outcomes for our patients, and our department ranks highly in peer-reviewed research funding.
Public Service
Nebraska Public Health Laboratory
The Nebraska Public Health Laboratory is a cooperative partnership among the University of Nebraska Medical Center, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and Nebraska Medicine.
Molecular Forensics Laboratory
The Molecular Forensics laboratory provides human DNA identification, forensic investigative genetic genealogy testing, pathology materials testing, research services and confidential testing. We also provide testing of physical evidence for law enforcement agencies and private attorneys.
Clinical Services
Our faculty provide clinical services through UNMC's clinical partners, including Nebraska Medicine.
