Benjamin J. Swanson, MD, PhD, is an associate professor in surgical pathology in the UNMC Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology. Dr. Swanson is also serves as the Director for the Division of Anatomic Pathology.
Dr. Swanson serves as fellowship director for the Gastrointestinal/Liver & Transplant Pathology Fellowship. His roles in pathology informatics and digital innovation include evaluation of laboratory information systems, implementation of large-scale clinical and research digital imaging and development of a pathology informatics fellowship.
Dr. Swanson also serves in several other roles at UNMC:
- Lead pathologist of the Integrated Cancer Repository for Cancer Research tissue bank, a multi-institutional collection of cancer registries housed at the Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.
- Director of the formalin tissue bank.
- Director of the Tissue Procurement Shared Resource/frozen tissue bank.
- Director of the tissue core for the Pancreas SPORE.
- Lead Pathologist of the iCARE2 Tissue Bank, Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center

I extensively collaborate with researchers from a wide range of fields at UNMC. I currently serve on the NCCN committee for Genetic/Familial High-Risk Assessment: Colorectal Committee.
