Rodney S. Markin, MD, PhD, DSc(hc)

Rodney S. Markin, MD, PhD, is the David T. Purtilo Distinguished Professor of Pathology & Microbiology in the UNMC Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology. He also serves as UNMC's associate vice chancellor of business development, and as executive director of  the UNeTech Institute, an entrepreneurial support organization through UNMC and the University of Nebraska Omaha.

Dr. Markin also holds courtesy faculty appointments in the UNMC departments of surgery and psychiatry.

His career has included a variety of leadership roles in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, including 10 years as department vice chair. Markin also took on clinical leadership responsibilities with both the UNMC faculty group practice plan and the College of Medicine. In 1997, he was named president and CEO of UNMC Physicians and associate dean for clinical affairs for the UNMC College of Medicine, becoming senior associate dean in 2006. 

Under his leadership, UNMC Physicians saw tremendous growth in physicians, staff and patient visits.

Markin served as interim dean of the College of Medicine in 2010 and 2011.

Research

Dr. Markin’s professional and academic research interests have focused on solid organ transplantation, informatics and clinical laboratory automation, which include but are not limited to, robotics, information systems, medical utilization management and outcomes optimization.
