McKenzie Lehman, PhD

McKenzie Lehman, PhD, is an assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology.

As a trained bacteriologist, she focuses on utilizing molecular approaches to understand what and how the pathogen Staphylococcus aureus acquires nutrients, with the ultimate goal of understanding the spatiotemporal nutrients available during an infection. She also is interested in understanding how nutrients act as molecular cues that result in regulatory changes in the bacterial cell.

Education & Training
  • BS: Creighton University.
  • PhD: University of Nebraska Medical Center.
Research
I study staphylococcal physiology with a interest in understanding the nutrients that the pathogen Staphylococcus aureus acquires during an infection. To study this, I focus on transport of nutrients and the catabolism of specific nutrients once the cell has acquired them.
Expertise/Area of Focus
Staphylococcal physiology and genetics
Honors & Awards
  • Outstanding Graduate Student Educator Award, UNMC Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, 2021.
Professional Memberships
  • American Society of Microbiology
