Samuel M. Cohen, MD, PhD

Samuel M. Cohen, MD, PhD, is a professor in the UNMC Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, and is the Havlik-Wall Professor of Oncology.

He received his MD and PhD from the University of Wisconsin, and served a pathology residency in pathology at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts. He served on the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Medical School until 1981, when he joined UNMC as professor in Pathology and Microbiology and in UNMC's cancer center. He served as department vice chair from 1981-92, and as chair 1992-2007. 

Dr. Cohen is active in surgical pathology, currently with a focus on gastrointestinal pathology. He served on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network panel for lower urinary tract tumors. He has been involved with basic research on chemical carcinogenesis, toxicology, and toxicologic pathology, having maintained an extramurally funded research program for almost 50 years.

Dr. Cohen serves on numerous national and international committees, including on the boards of Scientific Counselors for the National Toxicology Program of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, and the Environmental Protection Agency Science Advisory Board.

He has more than 480 publications in peer reviewed journals and more than 50 chapters.

Chemical carcinogenesis, mode of action and human relevance of animal studies, risk assessment, toxicologic pathology, arsenic.
