Rey Carabeo, PhD

Rey Carabeo, PhD, is a professor in the UNMC Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology. He received his undergraduate degree in microbiology and molecular genetics from the University of California Los Angeles. His graduate work was conducted in the laboratory of Prof. Norman Drinkwater at the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, focusing on genetics of susceptibility to hepatocarcinogenesis.

Dr. Carabeo moved to the Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, MT, for postdoctoral training with Dr. Ted Hackstadt on the cell biology aspects of host-chlamydia interactions. He also has held tenured positions at Imperial College London, University of Aberdeen, and Washington State University.

The Carabeo Laboratory conducts research on the interaction of the human pathogen Chlamydia trachomatis with the mucosal epithelium. The lab is addressing three major research questions:
  • How does Chlamydia invade non-phagocytic epithelial cells?
  • How does infection lead to scarring-related infertility?
  • How does Chlamydia respond and adapt to nutritional stress?
Education & Training
  • Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, BS, UCLA,
  • Oncology, PhD, University of Wisconsin-Madison,
  • Postdoc, Rocky Mountain Laboratories, NIAID, NIH
Research

Research interests include the molecular mechanisms of Chlamydia modulation of the host cell cytoskeleton and associated subcellular structures, the intersection of chlamydial response to nutritional stress and pathogen recognition, and epithelial cell-driven fibrosis.
