Curriculum Conferences

Departmental conferences provide a venue for stimulating learning and discussion, providing our residents with a comprehensive yet practical review of pathological subject matter. The conferences include in-depth review of topics, from AP/CP curriculum, interactive autopsy conferences, daily interesting cases, presentation of challenging issues/cases in laboratory medicine, journal club and grand rounds with the nationally prominent speakers. Residents may join in interdisciplinary conferences such as tumor boards, morbidity and mortality conferences, and institutional committees.

Resources

This department offers a wide array of resources that facilitate residency training. Examples include:
  • Centralized training as nearly all rotations occur on the UNMC campus
  • State of the art gross room
  • Five certified pathology assistants to assist in gross and autopsy pathology education
  • Reading rooms for individual and group diagnosis
  • Easy access to gross and microscopic photographic equipment
  • Extensive regional consultation service with exposure to exceptional material
  • In house ancillary and special laboratory services offering hands on experience in techniques and management
  • Personal desk space in collaborative office setting
  • Personal computer and microscope for each resident
  • Comprehensive, searchable anatomic pathology information system (Co-Path) with extensive on-site block and slide archives
  • On site cytotechnologist and medical technologist training programs allowing residents to take advantage of instruction and teaching opportunities
  • VPN access to hospital and anatomic pathology information systems
  • Access to ImmunoQuery, Expert Path, Path Primer, PathDoJo review course (third and fourth year residents), WHO series, ASCP Resident In-Service Examination study set, and Biorender

Facilities

Being part of such a growing and innovative campus, the Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology can offer our house officers with state-of-the-art facilities.

Renovated Clinical Lab

The department annually processes approximately 70,000 surgical specimens, 25,000 cytology specimens, 150 autopsies, 1,400 bone marrow biopsies and over 5 million clinical laboratory tests. More than 500 Forensic autopsies are performed at the Douglas County Coroner’s office yearly.

Pathology Services

McGoogan Library

In addition to the departmental library, the McGoogan Health Sciences Library on campus has over 175,000 books and 2,400 journals. It has 42 individual and 11 group reservable study rooms. The Maker Studio is equipped with technology and tools for creating and prototyping educational, clinical, and research materials.

In the department there are twenty-three primary research laboratories with a four primary research topics: microbiology, cancer biology, immunology, and bioinformatics. Our faculty lead several shared resource cores across campus and direct two University of Nebraska-designated research centers.
