Summer Pathology Externship

Dr Lazenby and trainees

The DPMI has an opportunity to participate in an 8-week summer externship open to Phase 1 UNMC medical students that will allow you to get firsthand exposure to the specialty of pathology and show you the immense impact that pathologists and laboratory medicine have on patient care. It will be immensely valuable to any student, no matter your interest in a pathology specialty.

During the externship, you will have a chance to have hands on participation in real clinical work within surgical pathology, autopsies, tumor boards, and a host of other areas. Not only will this time give you a leg up on content that you will encounter during the Phase 2 year and see how what you have learned so far is applied, but it is a nice item to have on your CV and an opportunity to meet faculty who could write future letters of recommendation and/or be mentors on future research projects.

You will also be provided with a stipend of at least $3,000. The externship starts in early May and ends in late July. Most days will run from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM and there are no weekend or holiday responsibilities. Dr Geoff Talmon is the director of this program and you will be working with the full compliment of pathologists in the department. Please contact Tyler Shearer for more information.
