The Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center hosts the Immunology, Pathology & Infectious Disease Graduate Program, which is part of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences.

The department's program offers opportunities for graduate study in a wide range of contemporary areas of pathology and microbiology, including bacteriology, immunology, virology, cell biology, and molecular biology. We offer exceptional training leading to a MS, PhD or combined MD/PhD degree.

Graduate Program Options

PhD in Immunology, Pathology & Infectious Disease
The PhD program is designed to provide comprehensive knowledge of basic principles of immunology, bacteriology, virology and molecular basis of disease processes, including the research and training experience required to pursue successful independent research in academic or industrial arenas.
MS in Immunology, Pathology & Infectious Disease
The MS program is designed to provide a strong background in pathobiology, microbiology and other basic sciences, thereby enhancing the student's preparation for further career advancement. You can choose to pursue either a Thesis Track or a Non-Thesis Track degree.
MD/PhD in Immunology, Pathology & Infectious Disease
The MD/PhD Scholars Program is designed to prepare a select group of outstanding students for careers as a research physician, also known as a physician-scientist. The career of a physician-scientist is unique, allowing you to address a patient's medical struggles while also pursuing research that may define the mechanism of the patient’s disease. The physician-scientist has an intimate understanding of this entire health care process, from bench to bedside, from community to public policy.
MS in Medical Laboratory Science
This MS program is intended for practicing, certified (preferred) or certification eligible [MLS(ASCP) or MT( ASCPi )] clinical laboratory science professional interested in advancing their knowledge and skills in medical laboratory sciences. This program curriculum focuses on advanced clinical laboratory scientific principles and processes, management applications and communication skills, educational best practices, and research methods and practices within the clinical laboratory. In addition to required core courses, the program is individually structured to allow for concentrated areas of study including clinical chemistry, microbiology, flow cytometry, immunohematology, and molecular diagnostics.
