Focused Opportunities

The Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology provides a number of educational and research opportunities to undergraduate college students, as well as middle and high school students.

Undergraduate Students

Undergraduate students considering careers in pathology, microbiology, immunology or other laboratory sciences are offered opportunities for doing research in one of our department laboratories in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program.

Middle and High School Students

The Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology offers two experiences: a semester-long Research Apprenticeship Program to high school students and a Young Scientist Research Workshop for middle and high school students for one week in the summer. Another opportunity: The UNMC High School Alliance, which is a yearlong experience for juniors and seniors.

The department hosts a number of other opportunities for high school students, college students, or individuals exploring a new career focus and wanting to see what pathology has to offer. There is job shadowing, the Visiting Students Learning Opportunities (VSLO) program, and external observers.
