Clinical Pathology
The Department of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology provides pathology expertise through the clinical laboratories of Nebraska Medicine, UNMC's primary clinical partner.
Our faculty are actively involved in teaching of medical students, residents and fellows.
Scott Koepsell, MD, PhD, is medical director of the laboratories.
CP Sections
The transfusion service maintains an inventory of blood components (red cell units, platelet units, plasma units and cryoprecipitate units). The service is accredited by the Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies. The laboratory performs pre-transfusion testing by both manual and automated methods depending on urgency of need. Analysis of immune hemolytic anemia is available.
The implantable tissue service maintains an inventory of implantable, non-cellular, biological tissues needed for orthopedic, plastic, cardiac and neurosurgery operations. The service also stores some autologous tissues for specific short-term needs.
Consultation requests regarding transfusion or tissue implantation products can be directed to the medical director, Aleh (Oleg) Bobr, MD.
The core laboratory at Nebraska Medicine is a semi-automated, 24/7 laboratory service providing routine chemistry, hematology and coagulation testing for Nebraska Medicine hospitals and clinics. The laboratory also includes the special chemistry section, which manages more complex or esoteric testing modalities. This includes various types of electrophoresis, nephelometry, radioimmunoassay, high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography and mass spectrometry.
The special coagulation laboratory service is a subsection of the hematopathology laboratory that includes bone marrow collection and processing and flow cytometry. The section provides a full menu of special coagulation assays including; all clotting factors and inhibitors, proteins C and S activity, ATIII, von Willebrand’s antigen and ristocetin co-factor activity, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia antibody detection, DRVVT and hexagonal phase phospholipid assay for lupus anticoagulant detection, anti-cardiolipin antibodies and platelet aggregation studies. Testing panels are available for hypercoagulability workups, von Willebrand screen, lupus anticoagulant and platelet aggregation and include an interpretative report by the section medical director.
Medical or technical questions can be directed to Shelly Williams, MD, medical director.
The clinical flow cytometry laboratory provides a full complement of immunophenotyping studies for evaluation of hematological malignancies, myelodysplasic syndromes and chronic myeloproliferative disorders, immunodeficiency states, stem cell transplantation, and DNA cell cycle analysis using state-of-the-art multi-parameter and multi-color analysis. A broad menu of testing panels is available for clinical use, and the laboratory can also establish protocols to support clinical and translational research activities.
The laboratory pathologists and technical staff are available for consultation by calling the laboratory at 402-559-7787. Medical or technical questions can be direct to Dr. John Cannatella.
The clinical microbiology laboratory at Nebraska Medicine provides a comprehensive menu of clinical medicine testing services including bacteriology, virology, mycobacteriology, mycology, serology and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Paul D Fey, PhD, is the medical director. View information about our Clinical Microbiology Fellowship. As part of our support for translational and clinical research, the laboratory offers assistance with establishing protocols and laboratory procedures that require microbiology related information.
Clinical research inquiries and other questions related to general microbiology can be directed to Peter Iwen, PhD. Consultation regarding virology, serology and overall operation can be directed to Joseph Khoury, MD.
The medical and technical specialists at Nebraska Medicine Clinical Laboratory have expertise to assist with a wide variety of interesting and challenging clinical problems or identify an appropriate Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services laboratory to provide testing. The lab provides testing to support Institutional Review Board-approved clinical research studies at reduced rates.
Biologics Production Facility
The Biologics Production Facility at Nebraska Medicine provides an environment that is compliant with Good Manufacturing Practices regulations, and is intended for the manufacture, processing, cryopreservation and storage of cells, tissues and cellular- and tissue-derived products for administration to humans, such as bone marrow, peripheral blood stem cells, cord blood cells, and vaccines. Certain non-cellular products may also be appropriate for manufacture within the facility.
Research projects that have reached translational or clinical phase of development are reviewed and approved by a multidisciplinary Scientific Advisory Committee. Technical and scientific assistance is provided to advance these projects and to interface as needed with applicable regulatory agencies or Institutional Review Board.
Inquiries and consultation can be directed to the facility medical director, Dr Scott Koepsell, or operations manager, Charles Branson, at 402-559-6009.
