Niedfelt Nursing Research Center
Extensive Research Support for Faculty and Students
Located in the state-of-the-art Center for Nursing Science building, the Niedfelt Nursing Research Center provides an organized infrastructure designed to propel our faculty and student progress across all stages of research, from proposal development and funding procurement to grants management and results dissemination. Led by Associate Dean for Research, Dr. Michele Balas, the Niedfelt Nursing Research Center is comprised of three grants administrators who coordinate the College of Nursing’s day-to-day pre and post award needs, three personnel providing research development and operational support, a full-time statistician and two graduate research assistants. We propel progress through four overarching activity areas:
- Facilitating research activities and development
- Promoting collaboration and mentoring
- Enhancing research resources and facilities
- Liaising with UNMC research offices
Developing our Researchers
In addition to our rich menu of services outlined below, the Niedfelt Nursing Research Center coordinates a twice-monthly forum during the academic year – PAVERs – for College of Nursing research faculty to discuss and obtain input on works in progress such as grant proposals, papers and presentations as well as to share resources and ideas that support research and scholarship endeavors. The name PAVER reflects the type of work we aim to accomplish during these meetings - Positive, Accountable, Visionary, Energetic and Research. PAVER Sessions are held at 11:00am CST via Zoom on the 2nd and 3rd Wednesdays of every month. Contact us if you are interested in joining, presenting at or learning more about PAVERs.

Florence A. Niedfelt
The Niedfelt Nursing Research Center was established in 1969 as the Nursing Research Center and was one of the nation's first non-federally supported nursing research centers. In 1988 it was formally renamed to honor Florence Niedfelt’s memory and significant donation of $610,000 to the College of Nursing. As an active community member of Grand Island, Niedfelt held a lifetime interest in the field of nursing. Niedfelt’s donation also established the Florence Niedfelt Endowed Professorship to support the request that a portion of these funds go toward furthering nursing student education.
