Morehead Center for Nursing Practice

The Morehead Center for Nursing Practice has faculty practice down to a science.

The UNMC College of Nursing is nationally recognized as a leader in faculty practice. From our work on faculty practice scholarship to national presentations and contributions to national guidelines, UNMC’s Morehead Center serves as an advocate for our faculty in an innovative approach: the right clinical practice as part of an academic appointment.

Through the Morehead Center’s integrated model, our faculty can achieve work-life balance while modeling for their students firsthand what extraordinary care looks like. By participating in faculty practice, faculty can engage in all areas of our tripartite mission, blending education, research and practice to the fullest potential. To the Morehead Center, clinical practice is not in addition to an academic appointment, but a mindful part of it. This is what’s possible at UNMC.

Faculty Practice

For faculty, the Morehead Center helps you balance your career while maintaining a work-life balance. We will work with you to include clinical practice hours as part of your regular academic appointment. Often, it’s as simple as dropping a teaching day, adding a clinical day.
For community agencies, the Morehead Center can develop a simple agreement to meet your organization’s needs. Morehead Center for Nursing Practice evaluates the integration of faculty practice at sites yearly. Practicing faculty maintain their employment with UNMC who manages all benefits. We share the focus and concern of your communities’ social determinants of health.

Faculty Practice FAQs

What is faculty practice?

Who is eligible?
Any faculty member of the UNMC College of Nursing. Currently, more than 25 faculty, with an array of specialties, are engaging in faculty practice with our community clinical partners.
Will this increase hours worked?
No. The Morehead Center helps you balance your career while maintaining work-life balance. We will work with you to include clinical practice hours as part of your regular academic appointment. Often, it’s as simple as dropping a teaching day, adding a clinical day.
How do I earn salary?
You will receive your regular salary from the University of Nebraska as part of your academic appointment. Any additional revenue the clinical work brings in over your regular salary will be distributed to you quarterly, on one of your monthly paychecks. Distribution of additional revenue is based on nine-month or twelve-month faculty appointments and hours worked.
What are some of the benefits for clinical employers?
As noted previously, practicing faculty are UNMC employees – so UNMC covers health insurance, 401K, vacation and even handles administrative payroll and malpractice insurance. Clinical employers merely have a monthly statement. Additionally, UNMC faculty can cover for one another, when applicable.
