Dr. Ramsell receives Volunteer Faculty of the Year Award for 2001
For his extraordinary role in UNMC’s educational programs, John Ramsell, M.D., has been named the first recipient of the UNMC College of Medicine’s Volunteer Faculty of the Year Award. A clinical associate professor of ophthalmology, Dr. Ramsell was formally recognized May 10 during the College of Medicine’s medical student convocation and hooding ceremony.

First AHEC director promotes health care in central Nebraska
Sarah Cunningham, Ph.D., was instrumental in bringing distance-learning opportunities to many rural schoolchildren of central Nebraska. Now, she’d like to play a role in helping children from those same areas become interested in health-care professions, so that some day, they’ll get their health education and practice in rural areas.
Dr. Cunningham is the first executive director of the Central Nebraska Area Health Education Center, the first such center in Nebraska.

Employee loyalty, satisfaction component added to strategic plan
Employee loyalty and satisfaction has long been an unwritten goal, but now it is etched into UNMC’s strategic plan.
Creating a campus culture that builds employee loyalty and satisfaction is the newest area of focus in UNMC’s 2002-2005 Strategic Plan, adopted May 7 by the Chancellor’s Council.

Residents see variety of patients, ailments with volunteer faculty member
At his office in Grand Island, Neb., David Colan, M.D., uses the opportunity of practicing in a small city to show internal medicine residents a broad perspective of medicine. Without the number of sub-specialists found in larger cities, Dr. Colan sees a wide variety of patients and ailments. He has been named UNMC’s Volunteer Faculty of the Month for February.

UNMC study finds voice disability prevalent among telemarketers
Telemarketers are more likely than the general population to have voice problems that affect their productivity; however, precautions can be taken to help protect against problems, according to an article in the May issue of the Archives of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery, a member of the JAMA/Archives family of journals.

Munroe-Meyer Institute Guild’s 35th annual garden walk is June 9
The 35th Annual Garden Walk will be Sunday, June 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (rain or shine). Sponsored by the Munroe-Meyer Institute Guild at UNMC, proceeds will support MMI’s therapeutic, training, and research activities benefiting children, youth and adults with developmental disabilities and chronic handicapping conditions.
Advance tickets are $8. Tickets will be $10 on the day of the event at all gardens. Children under 12 are admitted free. Stroller access is limited.

New parking rates announced for UNMC/NHS employees
UNMC/NHS will gain approximately 1,200 employee parking stalls in mid-November when construction is completed on Lot 50 – – the new $19.3 million parking structure along Emile Street. As a result, employees will have the option of moving into the six-level parking garage or to a more convenient parking lot on campus.
For the first time in four years, parking rates will increase effective July 1. The new rates will increase parking costs by $4.75 per month for most lots. The rate of the new parking garage, Lot 50, as well as the two existing parking structures (lots 4 and 5), will be $23 per month. Fees for lots 15 and 16, located on the east side of campus, are not increasing.

2002 Directory of Nebraska, Western Iowa Healthcare Resources now available
The 2002 edition of the Directory of Nebraska and Western Iowa Heathcare Resources is now available. The directory lists the most complete and accurate information regarding Nebraska and Western Iowa hospitals, clinics, physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and dentists. For the first time this year, a list of pharmacies have been to the directory.
