Gift allows COD to plan new student computer, study room
Thanks to a $50,000 gift from longtime university supporter Ken Morrison of Hastings, UNMC students are looking forward to a new student computer and study room at the College of Dentistry.

UNMC/NHS to celebrate Black History Month
The 2002 UNMC/NHS celebration of national Black History Awareness Month will feature a return engagement by jazz musician Preston Love. In addition, there will be an art exhibit in the McGoogan Library, a presentation on minority health disparities and a soul food day in the Nebraska Cafe. (See story for details).

Chinese Lunar New Year Party Feb. 16 on campus
You are invited to a new year’s party – Chinese style. The 2002 Chinese Lunar New Year Party will be Saturday, Feb. 16, from 6 to 11 p.m. at the UNMC Student Life Center, 3908 Jones St. The event is co-sponsored by the UNMC International Studies and Programs, Chinese Student and Scholar Associations at UNMC, University of Nebraska at Omaha and Creighton University, and the Omaha Chinese Professional Association. Dr. Berndt to retire as vice chancellor for academic affairs
After 20 years in several key administrative positions at UNMC, William Berndt, Ph.D., announced today that he is retiring as vice chancellor for academic affairs and dean for graduate studies and research effective May 31.
Dr. Berndt, 68, has served as vice chancellor since 1985 with the 17-year stint interrupted only when he served as interim chancellor in 1991-1992 and chancellor in 1996-1998.

UNMC employees and the public discovered the latest in the application of robotics Saturday at the UNMC Health and Technology Day at the Strategic Air and Space Museum. The event was part of the museum’s Robotic Exhibit. (See story for a collection of photos).

UNMC/NHS to celebrate Dress Red Day Feb. 14
There should be more wearin’ of the red than usual at UNMC/NHS on Valentine’s Day as the American Heart Association holds it second annual Dress Red Day in the Omaha metro.
Dress Red Day is part of the American Heart Association’s observance of American Heart Month, which is this month. NHS is sponsoring this year’s event. UNMC is one of more than 20 Metro-area companies participating.

Student fair highlights UNMC’s vast research projects
Resume in hand, Jamie Haferbier saw first-hand the broad spectrum of research activities being performed at UNMC. “I’m exploring opportunities for summer work,” said the University of Nebraska at Omaha biology major, as she wandered through 44 research displays Tuesday at the second annual Student Research Fair in the Durham Outpatient Center West Atrium.

Aluminum tab tally near 500,000
UNMC and NHS employees have collected aluminum can tabs for the past two years and are nearly halfway to their goal of saving 1 million tabs for the Omaha Ronald McDonald House.
