UNMC physician finds pyrotechnics hobby a blast
When Tom Poulton, M.D., isn’t taking care of critically ill children, spending time with his family or planting flowers in the yard, you might find him playing with fire.
For three days, at the crack of dawn, the UNMC professor of pediatrics, critical care and anesthesiology helped build and detonate pyrotechnics that would add realism to simulated airfield strafing and bomb runs during last month’s Offutt Air Force Base air show.

British teen in Omaha for rare brain surgery procedure
All Americans will swallow hard and reflect next week on the first anniversary of Sept. 11. However, for a British family staying at the Lied Transplant Center, Sept. 11 will have an extra special meaning.
“It’s quite symbolic,” said Nigel Kendall, father of Katherine Kendall, an 18-year-old girl who is in Omaha to undergo a rare brain surgery procedure at UNMC/NHS to relieve her ongoing epileptic seizures. “Katherine’s surgery will be finished on Sept. 11.”

UNMC/NHS segment not on ABC’s Good Morning America
UNMC/NHS did not appear Monday on ABC’s Good Morning America as planned. Bill Cunningham, ABC producer, contacted UNMC Public Affairs Monday to say the segment was bumped because of time constraints. “So sorry,” he said in an e-mail. “It’s a winner.”

Fourth quarter research grants lift year-end total to record $50.8 million
UNMC received fourth quarter grant awards totaling $15.1 million, bringing the year-end total to $50.8 million — its best year ever. The $50 million milestone represents a 23 percent increase in funding over last year’s $41.3 million total.

Project to improve housing facilities for UNMC laboratory rodents
At UNMC and across the country, the burgeoning field of genomics has led to an explosion in laboratory mouse populations. Researchers are hopeful it also may lead to an unprecedented potential in identifying genes that cause disease or in possible treatments.
On Friday, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents approved UNMC’s most pressing research infrastructure need — a $1.5 million containment and isolation facility for laboratory rodents in the existing 4230 Building on campus.

The 2002-03 UNMC operating budget has been balanced and loaded into the SAP financial management system. UNMC continued to be mainly self-supporting, with only 29 percent of its funding coming from state general fund appropriations.
