Dr. Hanlon touts advantages of rural medicine

For the past 20 years, Robert Hanlon, M.D., of the Chadron Medical Clinic has volunteered his time as a faculty member in the rural preceptorship program. In May he received the UNMC College of Medicine’s Volunteer Faculty of the Month award.

Employees ride the rails on a handcar

On Tuesday, UNMC and NHS employees tried their hand at riding a handcar — in a UNMC parking lot.

The handcar and temporary railroad track were brought to campus Tuesday as part the Golden Spike Invitational Handcar Race, which will be Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. near the Durham Western Heritage Museum. The handcar invitational is being sponsored by Union Pacific Railroad and benefits the Ronald McDonald House and Special Olympics.

Richart’s earns Gold ‘U’ with creative promotional posters

Sarah Richart has made the familiar faces of Mount Rushmore, the Mona Lisa and the Wizard of Oz even more familiar to the UNMC community.

With an artist’s touch, she has replaced the famous faces with those of her less famous UNMC colleagues. The comical and eye-catching posters encourage Business and Finance employees to nominate deserving coworkers for the Chancellor’s Silver ‘U’ Award.

CNND celebrates fifth anniversary with symposium, dinner

UNMC’s Center for Neurovirology and Neurodegenerative Disorders (CNND) will celebrate its fifth anniversary, on July 18-19, with a symposium, a critical review of its research and a dinner.

The symposium and review will feature a blue ribbon panel of external advisors and National Institutes of Health officials who will share research perspectives and judge the progress of the center. CNND investigators will follow the panelists with reviews of their own laboratories’ research and development over the past five years.

UNMC is one of the leading economic drivers in the state, bringing in millions of dollars each year through research and patient care services, while providing a variety of key programs to rural and underserved areas of the state.

That was the message delivered Saturday by UNMC Chancellor Harold M. Maurer, M.D., at the University of Nebraska Board of Regents meeting at the Holiday Inn Express in Valentine.

Pro wrestlers to raise funds for pediatric AIDS patients

Pro wrestling comes to Omaha on Saturday in the form of a unique fundraiser to benefit pediatric HIV/AIDS patients.

The wrestlers are associated with World League Wrestling (WLW), an organization headed by Harley Race, a legendary pro wrestling figure who is an eight-time world heavyweight champion for the National Wrestling Alliance.

UNMC officials take part in congressional field hearing

Two UNMC officials testified last week during a congressional field hearing on bioterrorism at UNMC.

U.S. Rep. Lee Terry, R-Neb., hosted the July 3 hearing of the Subcommittee on Government Efficiency, Financial Management and Intergovernmental Relations. The two-hour hearing examined the effectiveness of the federal government in assisting state and local governments in preparing for a possible biological, chemical or nuclear attack.
