UNMC/NHS launch energy conservation campaign
Conserving electrical energy is as simple as flicking off a light switch, shutting down a computer or closing window blinds.
They may not seem like substantial money savers, but multiplied by thousands of employees across the UNMC/NHS campus can result in a significant reduction in electrical consumption and cost. As a result, UNMC/NHS is launching an energy conservation campaign to “turn off the energy, turn on the savings.”
Campus leaders hope to reduce the campus energy demand by 5 percent over the next year. Their immediate goal, however, is to reduce the energy demand in August.

Part of the resolution’s message was clear: to the maximum extent possible, efforts to reduce costs and improve the use of existing resources should be accomplished through “vertical,” program-eliminating cuts rather than across-the-board, “horizontal” cuts.

Camp Munroe serves extraordinary students
The charm of Camp Munroe is how ordinary it is. Staff members and volunteers create the traditional day camp activities: sing-alongs, art projects and community outings. But this camp is extraordinary because of the children it serves. These children have developmental disabilities.

In addition, another $500 million shortfall is projected over the fiscal years 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. (See story for NU President L. Dennis Smith’s statement regarding Gov. Johanns proposed budget cuts).

NHS has a department that responds to the educational needs of hospitalized children — Educational Support Services (ESS). But through the patient wards of the Lied Transplant Center, NHS Clarkson and University Hospitals and Ronald McDonald House, ESS is better known as the 2 Cool Hospital School. (Click to find out how you can contribute to the school’s first ever school supplies drive and possibly win a free ice cream social).
