Nursing celebrates diversity with Hispanic Heritage Month event
More than 100 faculty, students and staff from the UNMC College of Nursing in Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney and Scottsbluff, took a trip over the noon hour to Latin America. In reality, participants celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month on campus, learning about Latin American culture.

UNMC/NHS will mark the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on America with a special remembrance ceremony. The UNMC/NHS ceremony will be Wednesday, Sept. 11, at 8:30 a.m. in the Swanson Hall Courtyard, just west of the Durham Outpatient Center.

Runners, walkers celebrate College of Medicine centennial
Approximately 100 people turned out Sunday morning for the College of Medicine’s centennial run/walk. The four-mile run/walk, which commemorated the College of Medicine’s 100th anniversary of joining the University of Nebraska, took place on the Field Club Trail, south of the UNMC Student Life Center.

Medical students discover benefits of National Guard membership
You can imagine how happy Rachel Blake, M.D., was when she found out her medical school student loans would be paid off about three years after graduation.
In exchange for her medical services for one weekend a month and 15 days of annual training a year, the resident and Nebraska Army National Guard member receives student loan repayment, monthly pay, low cost life insurance, credits toward a military retirement and other benefits.

UNMC physician finds pyrotechnics hobby a blast
When Tom Poulton, M.D., isn’t taking care of critically ill children, spending time with his family or planting flowers in the yard, you might find him playing with fire.
For three days, at the crack of dawn, the UNMC professor of pediatrics, critical care and anesthesiology helped build and detonate pyrotechnics that would add realism to simulated airfield strafing and bomb runs during last month’s Offutt Air Force Base air show.

British teen in Omaha for rare brain surgery procedure
All Americans will swallow hard and reflect next week on the first anniversary of Sept. 11. However, for a British family staying at the Lied Transplant Center, Sept. 11 will have an extra special meaning.
“It’s quite symbolic,” said Nigel Kendall, father of Katherine Kendall, an 18-year-old girl who is in Omaha to undergo a rare brain surgery procedure at UNMC/NHS to relieve her ongoing epileptic seizures. “Katherine’s surgery will be finished on Sept. 11.”
