Oct. 6 is National PA Day

There are approximately 40,500 physician assistants — licensed health professionals who practice medicine under the supervision of a physician — in clinical practice across the country. On Sunday, Oct. 6, they will be honored during National PA day for the quality care they provide to millions of Americans.

British family returns home after daughter’s rare brain surgery

A British family who traveled to Omaha with the hopes that a skilled neurosurgeon’s hands would help their daughter returned to England yesterday in high spirits.

On Sept. 1, Nigel and Anna Kendall of Surrey, England, brought their 18-year-old daughter, Katherine to Omaha to seek the help of the only surgeon in the world they knew of who might be able to help their daughter — Arun-Angelo Patil, M.D., UNMC/NHS neurosurgeon.

Nebraska florists to raise money for cancer research

Nebraska florists will take aim on cancer in October through the fourth annual Bouquet of Hope program which supports cancer research at the UNMC’s Eppley Cancer Center.

A total of 18 florists in eight Nebraska communities are participating in this year’s program, which is sponsored by the Friends of the UNMC Eppley Cancer Center, a 15-member community based group committed to raising funds for cancer research.

Ada Lindsey, Ph.D., announces plans to retire as College of Nursing dean

Ada Lindsey, Ph.D., professor and dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, has announced her plans for retirement, effective July 31, 2003. She has served as dean of the College of Nursing since March 1, 1995.

“The timing is right,” said Dr. Lindsey. “I’ve been working in nursing education for more than 40 years and will have served as dean at UNMC for more than eight years. I’ve always felt that it’s good for institutions to have a change in leadership at least every decade. “

Beginning today, UNMC will air its fall series of radio commercials highlighting research and education. The commercials will run through Oct. 13 and again from Oct. 28 through Nov. 10 on stations in Omaha, Lincoln and communities across the state.

Internationally renowned researcher joins ophthalmology faculty

Toshimichi Shinohara, Ph.D., admits he didn’t know much about Nebraska, much less the University of Nebraska Medical Center, when a colleague mentioned that he may want to explore possibilities in Omaha.

A couple of months into his role as a researcher and professor in the department of ophthalmology, Dr. Shinohara is excited about the next decade’s promise for his research at UNMC.

University of Nebraska enrollments increase for third year

University of Nebraska enrollments have increased for the third consecutive year, according to its annual headcount enrollment report. Enrollments have increased each year since the fall of 2000, following several years of declining enrollments.

Mini-medical school explores research in treating head, nose, throat diseases

UNMC and eight sites across Nebraska invite the public to attend UNMC Mini-Medical School, a free health educational series on four consecutive Thursdays beginning Oct. 3. The four-part series is titled, “What’s a-head: Exploring research advances of the head, neck, ear, nose and throat.”

The series will be Oct. 3, 10, 17 and 24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. C.D.T., will be broadcast live from Omaha via satellite to: Columbus, Grand Island, Kearney, Lincoln, Norfolk, O’Neill, Red Cloud and Scottsbluff. Anyone with NebSat2 can downlink the series.

Effective Oct. 1, individuals will able to access and use UNMC’s new online employment application, giving applicants the ability to apply for UNMC positions any time of the day, seven days a week.
