UNMC researcher studies bone diseases

UNMC is quickly becoming a national center for Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), thanks to Horacio Plotkin, M.D., who joined the Munroe-Meyer Institute’s department of inherited metabolic diseases several months ago. Dr. Plotkin’s level of expertise in OI (often known as “brittle bone disease”) and other pediatric bone diseases is not only unique to Omaha, but to other American cities.

Team Kaos to cap successful year

Team Kaos will cap its 2002 season Sunday (Nov. 24) with the Nebraska State Cyclo Cross Championships. The team, sponsored by UNMC, NHS and UMA, will try to add another state championship to this year’s list of accomplishments. Sunday’s event will be at Standing Bear Lake.

NHS breaks ground on new building

UNMC’s partner, Nebraska Health System, broke ground Thursday on a four-story building that will physically unite two hospitals, two cultures and two histories.

The Center for Clinical Excellence will physically connect Clarkson Hospital and University Hospital allowing the consolidation of core medical services now spread across both campuses. Scheduled to open in May 2005, the building will house a new emergency room, surgical area, radiology department and neonatal intensive care unit.

UNMC stroke expert recommends redefinition of ‘mini-strokes’

Citing an outdated medical definition of the 1950s and 60s that may prevent thousands at risk for stroke from getting appropriate evaluation and treatment, a group of seven recognized stroke experts, including a UNMC neurologist Pierre Fayad, M.D., have recommended a change of the definition for transient ischemic attack (TIA). Dr. Fayad has studied stroke for 14 years.
